International Youth Day 2026: Bringing Young People Together Through Football in Brazzaville

On a dusty football pitch in Madibou, the sound of cheering, conversation and competition brought the community together for a special occasion: International Youth Day 2026. To commemorate this important global day, the Cornish Views Education Foundation (CVEF) organised a community football event bringing young people together through sport, creating an opportunity not only to compete, but also to connect, participate and celebrate the potential of Congo-Brazzaville's younger generation.
International Youth Day is observed every year on 12 August. The United Nations theme for 2026, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” recognises that although young people grow up in very different circumstances, many share the same hopes: dignity, opportunity, meaningful participation, quality education and the chance to build a better future.
More Than a Football Match
For CVEF, the football match was about much more than the final score. Sport creates a space where young people can meet, communicate and work towards a common goal. On the pitch, backgrounds and individual circumstances become less important. What matters is teamwork, discipline, determination and respect. These are values that extend far beyond football.
The United Nations recognises sport as an important enabler of sustainable development, with the potential to promote tolerance and respect while contributing to youth empowerment, health, education and social inclusion. In Brazzaville, we saw those principles come alive. Young players competed with energy and determination while children, families, friends and other members of the community gathered around the pitch to watch and support them. The event transformed a local football ground into a place of community participation and shared experience.
Different Teams. One Community.
The photographs from the day tell their own story. Teams arrived in different colours. Players competed intensely. Spectators gathered around the pitch. There were tackles, goals, celebrations and, inevitably, plenty of dust. But when the football stopped, everyone remained part of the same community. That is particularly meaningful in the context of this year's International Youth Day theme. Different contexts do not have to mean different futures.
Young people in Brazzaville may face challenges very different from those experienced by young people elsewhere in the world, but their ambitions are instantly recognisable: to learn, to develop their talents, to find opportunities, to contribute and to build fulfilling lives.
The UN's 2026 International Youth Day message calls for young people to be treated as active partners and highlights their creativity, leadership and capacity to strengthen their communities.
At CVEF, we strongly share that belief.
Creating Opportunities Beyond the Classroom
Our work is rooted in education, but we believe supporting young people means looking beyond the walls of a classroom. A child or young person needs a safe environment in which to learn. They need adequate school infrastructure and sanitation. They need encouragement and opportunities to participate in their community. And they need adults and organisations prepared to listen to their aspirations and invest in their future. That is why CVEF's approach combines education, infrastructure improvement and community engagement.
Events such as this football match complement that work. They allow us to meet young people in their own communities, strengthen relationships and create positive experiences around participation, teamwork and leadership. They also remind us of something important: development should not simply be something done for young people. Young people should be part of it.
A Community Celebration
One of the most encouraging aspects of the event was the involvement of the wider community.
The football pitch became a gathering place, with spectators watching from the sidelines and surrounding areas as the teams competed. The enthusiasm around the matches demonstrated the ability of grassroots sport to bring people together in a simple but powerful way.
CVEF was also pleased to support the occasion with football equipment, reinforcing our commitment to creating practical opportunities for young people to participate.
For us, these moments matter. A football shirt or a match cannot solve the structural challenges facing young people. But community activities can build relationships, encourage participation and create the sense that young people's talents and ambitions deserve to be seen and supported.
And those relationships are fundamental to long-term change.

International Youth Day should be more than a date on the calendar. It is an opportunity to ask what we are doing, as charities, communities, businesses, institutions and individuals, to give young people the conditions they need to thrive.
